Colour Analysis

why is colour so important?

Wearing the right colours means your features stand out and you have a healthy glow.  People look directly into our eyes, why? They are sub-consciously attracted by what is referred to as the  ‘halo of colour’ as we exude a fabulous glow!  Who doesn’t want to look healthy and glowing? Why Is colour so important?

Wearing the right colours means that you features stand out and you have a healthy glow.

When we wear the right colours other people tend to look directly into our eyes.  Why?

They are sub-consiously attracted by what is referred to as the  ‘halo of colour’ as we exude a fabulous glow!  Who doesn’t want to look healthy and glowing?

Unless you have had a colour analysis done then I will always recommend we start right here!

The best colour in the world is the one that looks good on you – Coco Chanel

Do people know if I am wearing the wrong colours?

They won’t necessarily know you are wearing the wrong colours.  However, the colours you are wearing may distract them.   Why? Because the colours may overwhelm us and whoever we are engaging with may be drawn to the colour not us.

Alternatively we may look tired or unwell.  Have you ever been asked if you’re feeling okay, but until that point you’d been feeling fine?  What’s your reaction? Do you surreptitiously start feeling your forehead? Or do you make an excuse to disappear to the loo and poke your tongue in the mirror?

Well don’t – chances are that you’re simply wearing the wrong colours!   The wrong colours can make you look tired and unwell.  Whereas the wearing the right colours will make you look radiant.  Wearing the right colours will also have what I call a 3-D effect (you won’t find that in any styling manuals).  What I mean is that the right colours make your features stand out but the wrong colours will have a flattening (or 2-D effect).

Will I have To buy a new wardrobe?

The primary question my clients have before a colour analysis is ‘will I have to buy a new wardrobe?’ No.  This simply isn’t the case and there are two reasons for that:

  • While you may not have everything right, chances are that you’ll have been attracted to the right colours for at least 50% of the time.  But please don’t assume that means 50% of your wardrobe needs to head to the charity shop!
  • It is okay to wear the wrong colours!  But the rule is that you shouldn’t wear them right next to your face.

Take me for example – I love wearing black. It’s striking and I feel good.  As a self- confessed dyed blond who loves fake tan, I also love black!

I overcome the fact that I can look washed out with black by wearing a striking necklace or a scarf in the right colours.  This has the effect of distracting from the black and diluting its impact!  In this image I’m demonstrating how wearing black without accessories does not do me any favours.

Shopping Is so much easier

You will look fabulous and feel fantastic by wearing the right colours.  But the benefits are much greater than that!  It makes shopping so much easier. You can simply disregard rails full of clothes because they are not in your colours.  Also, if you prefer to shop in charity shops with a diverse range of stock knowing your colours will help you to focus.

Another benefit is that you won’t make costly mistakes of buying clothes in the wrong colours.    Not only will you save money but you’re not buying clothes that will just end up lurking in your wardrobe. You know those items that you put on and take one look in the mirror before taking off again.  Not sure what’s wrong but knowing they’re not quite right?  More often than not it’s because they’re in the wrong colours.

However, it’s also worth explaining that most people can wear most colours.  It’s about finding the right shade and tone for you.

What happens with a colour analysis?

A colour analysis will determine your seasonal colour palette.

I will first check to see if you are a warm or cool palette.    This I do by primarily considering the undertone of your skin. This is not the presenting colour that we can see.

Our undertone is made up of a combination of melatonin, carotene and haemoglobin.  It’s genetic and doesn’t change.  Although as you age stronger colours may be a bit overwhelming.  A tan or fake tan doesn’t impact your undertone or your palette, but allows you to wear slightly stronger colours.

I’m often asked if hair colour impacts your colour palette.  To some degree yes.  Your undertone and natural hair colour are genetic, so there will be a link.  If you dye your hair you will still be the same colour palette but you may find that some colours work better than others.   Equally if you allow your hair to go grey then you may notice changes within your palette.

Then I will analyse if you are best suited to bright or muted colours.  From this I can determine what colour palette looks best on you.

We will then look in more detail at the colours in your palette.  You will receive a handbag-sized swatch that you can use when you do shop.

Then we will look at some colour mixing options.  Experimenting with colour can be quite scary for some people.  Whenever I work with a client on her wardrobe, I always hear ‘I’d have never thought of wearing those colours together, but they work’.   Once you start to experiment with colour it gets easier, like anything practise makes perfect! I will show you an App you can download to help you get used to using colour.

So to recap
  1. There will be no need to throw away up to half of your wardrobe
  2. It is possible to wear the wrong colours
  3. Most people can wear all colours – it’s about getting the right shade and tone
  4. Shopping becomes easier and cheaper
  5. Black is not in everyone’s colour palette!

While that appears to be contradictory, what’s important is by knowing your colours it is a game changer.  You can start to make changes to your wardrobe (gradually) and have a much more co-ordinated look.  By using accessories you can get the colours close to your face right and that’s the most important bit!

Image Consultation

How to dress for your awesome body

An image consultation will help you to look fantastic and feel fabulous so that you’re smiling inside and out.   Brimming with confidence and graciously receiving compliments about your appearance. Click on the headings below to find out more

Where do we begin with an image consultation

We will look at how you want the world to see you.    Together we will create your own unique style blend!

We will explore how you want to show up in the world, what kind of person are you.  I call this your style DNA, the type of person you are and how you express it through your clothes.  You may say that you have different characteristics depending what activities you’re doing.  But the truth is that you are the same person and so whatever you are doing you will find ways to express that through your choice of clothes.  An image consultation will help you to bring this to the fore so that choosing your clothes becomes so much easier.

Well it’s a blend of:

  • Colours
  • Styles
  • Fabrics
  • Finishes
  • Accessories

Once we’ve planted these seeds we will nurture them and watch them flourish.  As they blossom you will feel empowered to look fantastic and feel fabulous every time you get dressed.

What's holding you back?

We will consider anything that might be holding your back from expressing your true sense of style.  There are a number of factors that can sometimes affect the way we express ourselves.

These can include the way we feel about money and spending it on ourselves.  Our attitude to clothes that we do buy – how often do you save something for best and it never gets worn? [link vlog].  These are just a couple of examples and I will give you tips to overcome some of these barriers we have to expressing ourselves through our clothes.

Love Your Body - It's Easy When You Know How

As we go through the image consultation we will look at what parts of your body you do love and what you’re not so keen on.  Note we start on the ‘love’ and not on the negatives!

We will consider what you find easy to shop for and what presents a challenge.   This helps me to build up a picture so that I can give you the best advice on how to dress and shop in the future.

You can only look fantastic when you understand what suits you.   Equally when you know what suits you, it will help you to understand what styles to avoid.

What Happens Next?

To help you achieve this I will help you to understand your shape, scale and proportion.   We will work through different garment types.  I will show you what works for you and your unique style blend.

Being a stylist is a bit like being a magician.  I will share with you the fabulous tricks you can use to create wardrobe magic.  By the end of our image consultation you will know how to conjure your own unique wardrobe blend with styles that really suit you.  I will also look at your face shape, to help determine the best hairstyles, glasses and accessories to choose.

We will look at accessories, how to choose and use them to enhance and flatter your body.  I love accessories; they are such a fantastic way to create more outfits from fewer clothes.  But my own research has found that many women don’t wear accessories. They are simply not sure how to make them work.

Following our image consultation I will create your unique Style File.  This will be your personal guide to help you look fantastic showing you what styles to look for and just as importantly what to avoid.

This image consultation will take around 90 minutes and we will do this together in the comfort of your home.   If you haven’t had your colours analysed I strongly recommend that we do this at the same time.

Wardrobe de-clutter

Why a wardrobobe de-clutter makes you feel awesome

Be honest with yourself, do you really know what’s in your wardrobe?  If you don’t then my guess is that you have items in your wardrobe that no longer fit, are too worn to wear or have just never been worn.  It’s time for a wardrobe de-clutter. Click on the headings below to find out more

The benefits of a wardrobe de-clutter

Carrying out a wardrobe de-clutter is cathartic to say the least.  Too much clutter in our lives directly results in stress.

According to researchers at UCLA’s Center of Everyday Lives and Families (CELF), there’s a link between high cortisol (a stress hormone) in women who own homes with a “high density of household objects.”

If you are hanging on to items of clothing because you will ‘lose that bit of weight’ and fit back into them some day, you’re putting yourself under immense pressure.  I’m not saying that everything that is too tight has to go, but be realistic about it.

Knowing you have fewer items to chose from, but that each one of them works to create an outfit makes getting dressed easy and no longer a chore.

Clutter can affect your mood, as a messy room or wardrobe can be a sign your life is in a mess.  Clearing your physical space can also clear your mental space.  It can release energy and you will often feel ready to allow new things in.

A minimalist style can help you to be more creative.  With only one jersey dress for example, gives you lots of scope to style it to create different looks.  Conversely if you have several jersey dresses you’re more likely to just alternate one or two dresses.  You are less likely to experiment with accessories and jackets to create different looks.

Okay I'm convinced so what next?

I will come to your house and we will discuss the image you want to create.  Who are you and how do you want to show up in the world.

We will then look at your lifestyle.  We will consider roughly how much time you spend on various activities.  This helicopter view gives me an insight into whether your wardrobe reflects your lifestyle.

Then I will ask you to show me your favourite outfit or items of clothing.   I want to understand what you love about them and how they make you feel.  By starting with the benchmark of an item you love puts you in a positive frame of mind.

We will then work through your wardrobe item by item to decide whether an item should stay.  This is based on a number of factors, which will be personal to you.  But the fundamental questions we will ask are:

Do you love it?
Do you wear it?

If you don’t love it, then what’s it doing in your wardrobe?  If you don’t wear it then we’ll question why.  It may be in the wrong colours or style for you.  It may not reflect who you are.  Or it may simply be that you haven’t worked out how to style it, so it remains hanging in your wardrobe.

If you have items in your wardrobe that you’re not wearing it’s important to explore the reasons why.  I’m not about throwing clothes out for the sake of it. But equally if it’s not right for you and we can’t make it work by creating outfits with other items then it is time to say goodbye.

What about the clothes for recycling?

I will give you ideas of what you can do with the clothes we get rid of as part of your wardrobe de-clutter.   This will range from what to do with clothes that have a resale value to those that are not suitable for re-wear.

Passionate about clothes not ending up in landfill I will give you a wide range of options depending on the potential value and condition of the garments.

There may also be clothes that may work if they are altered or repurposed – again I will make suggestions and recommendations based on individual items.

Practicalities of a wardrobe de-clutter

You will need to be ready to try on your clothes as we go through the wardrobe de-clutter process.  How an item looks on a hanger is so often quite different from how it looks when you’re wearing it.

As we create new outfits, combining different pieces you may not have considered, I will create a photographic record of these.   I will also make a list of items that you may wish to purchase.

The time spent on this consultation will vary depending on the size of your wardrobe, I allow three hours.

If you have not had your colours analysed I strongly recommend we combine this service with a colour analysis.

You may also want to add the wardrobe de-clutter to a colour analysis and image consultation to give yourself a complete style makeover.   We can then use everything we have from the colour and style consultation to put to best use as we work through the wardrobe de-tox.

  • What to consider when choosing glasses
  • How to style your hair for your face shape
  • A toolkit for creating illusions with your clothing
  • Your handbag sized colour swatch for your seasonal colour palette
How should I prepare for a wardrobe magic consultation?

Think about what struggles you have with your wardrobe and what would really make your life easier with your clothes.

It’s also a good idea to have in mind your favourite outfit (if you want to bring along a photo of you wearing your favourite outfit that would be perfect).

On the day you will need to wear leggings and a sleeveless top – as I need to see your silhouette (I won’t be taking measurements around your body but will be checking your height and some vertical measurements.

I need you to come along without make up.  If this is a problem, please feel free to bring make up remover and cotton wool with you, but I cannot analyse your colours if you are wearing make up.

How does wardrobe magic differ from your other services?

I’m really glad you asked that!  Well to be honest it’s the same as combining my colour analysis and image consultation services.  But the difference is that we do this at my home rather than me travelling to your home.  This means I can offer the service at a reduced rate.

Personal Shopping

how to make shopping for clothes fun

Does the thought of going shopping for clothes fill you with horror or delight? It’s an urban myth that all women love shopping for clothes.  In fact the majority of women find it a stressful and frustrating experience. Click on the headings below to find out more

Do you need a shopping trip?

How many times do you come home without making a purchase or find yourself simply returning your items a few days later?  Perhaps you wear an outfit once then consign it to the back of the wardrobe?  Or worse still you find it months later with the tags still intact….

Perhaps you do not have time to shop and find yourself browsing online.  This can be equally frustrating and sometimes more time consuming because of the sheer choice.

If you would like some help and guidance then why not book a shopping experience.    I only offer a shopping for clothes service after we’ve had a personal styling consultation (colour, image, wardrobe).

Why? Because I want to understand your style or what you are looking to achieve in terms of your look. I can offer a better shopping for clothes experience if I understand your issues with finding clothes.  More importantly I want to understand what you have in your wardrobe and how we may be able to utilise clothes you own so we are not shopping for clothes you do not need.

Before we head to the shops there’s definitely some homework to do!

Preparation is key when shopping for clothes

We will have a discussion about your objectives.  Are you looking for an outfit for a special occasion?  Do you want to understand how to shop for second hand or vintage clothes?  What to look for and how not to become stressed and overwhelmed when you shop.   Would you like some hints and tips about where to shop for your style?  This list is not exhaustive.  We just need to agree what you want to get out of the shopping experience.

You will need to give me an idea of your budget.   We will discuss any requirements you have regarding fabrics (e.g. allergies and sensitivities).  Then we’ll have a chat about the brands you like and any that you really dislike.

My pre-shop homework

Once we’ve decided where we plan to shop I’ll do a visit to the location first.  I’ll look at what’s available.   If necessary I’ll order online via click and collect to ensure we have a good selection of clothes to try when we visit.   If I am not satisfied that we will find what we’re looking for I will suggest an alternative location.   I do not want you to come away disappointed from a shopping session with me.

Concierge service shopping for clothes

If you really hate shopping for clothes this can be a great alternative.

We start by discussing your style objectives and your budget.  I will create a vision board to show you what’s available in store or online.

I will shop on your behalf and we will arrange to meet for you to try on the items.   For any unwanted items I will arrange the return.

Shopping for clothes a more sustainable approach

I am happy to advise on brands and fabrics that have a more sustainable approach.   I can recommend fabrics that have a lower environmental impact than traditional cotton and polyester.    Brands that have a more ethical approach to manufacturing, whether that be their policies towards the environment or people that make their garments.

I will encourage you to look at pre-loved boutiques both online and offline as well as charity stores.

Half day shopping experience

On the day of our shopping trip we’ll meet either in Hertfordshire, Cambridge, Milton Keynes or London.  We’ll have a quick review of your objectives, if you’ve added a couple don’t worry – we’ll do our best to fit these in!  Remember the aim of the trip is to have fun and to teach you how to shop.

We will then visit the stores where I’ve done a pre-shop, so you simply need to take the clothes and try them on.

As our shopping experience is as much about helping you to go shopping for clothes I will show you where to shop for the brands that suit you.   We will look at brands that match your style personality and work for your budget.  This process of narrowing down the choice is very cathartic for people who find shopping for clothes overwhelming.

We will spend up to 4 hours shopping together and the trip will include coffee when we meet and lunch.

If that sounds good why not have a chat with me about personal shopping?
