Does your bedroom turn into a battleground every time you get dressed? As you put things on only to tear them off again in frustration? Do you find items lurking in the back of your wardrobe with price tags attached? So much of that is because they are not in your colours. Today I’m going to share with you how I do one of my Online Colour Analysis consultations, which makes it so much easier to get dressed.
Why Is It So Important To Know Your Colours?
That’s a really good question and if you haven’t had your colours done you may well wonder what the fuss is about!
Well here are the top reasons why knowing your colours is so important:
- It makes shopping for clothes easier. You can immediately discard clothes that are not in your colours.
- You do not waste money on clothes that are in the ‘wrong’ colours. Those items hiding in the back of your wardrobe never seeing the light of day!
- Wearing the right colours is empowering – you look healthy and feel more confident.
- The colour of our clothes can have an impact on the way others respond to us. The compliments you receive when you’re wearing a certain colour are often about the fact you radiate health and confidence.
- It’s easier to get dressed in the mornings – less frustration and overwhelm means less stress!
Why Have Your Colours ‘Done’?
Women who have had their colours ‘done’ have probably had them done in person. You’ve either gone to see a personal stylist or she’s come to your home.
The stylist has used coloured drapes to compare how the colours work. You’ve sat still wearing a glamorous turban and white cape while she drapes you with endless colours. She may even have frowned a bit and pulled the odd funny face (I do my best not to honestly!)
So what is the online equivalent?
Everyone’s cameras, lighting and environment is different. We see colours differently as a result. To avoid the anomalies caused by technology I do the work in advance and then get together with my clients.
When a client signs up to work with me, I ask them to complete a short questionnaire. Then to supply me with some photos – to make sure these are what I need for the analysis I send a short video.
Then I get to work, before our consultation, this allows me to pull all the funny faces behind the scenes, as I work out what season the client is.
Doing the preparation in advance means that I have ‘thinking time’ and can really consider what palette works best. I’ve got time to research some clothing options in the correct season to give my clients some up to date examples.
How Do You Know What Colours Are Right For Me?
I will show you some examples of the online colour sessions, but first a little science!
When we look at someone’s colours we are considering what palette works best for the client taking into account the undertone of her skin. The undertone is not the presenting colour but instead is effectively the colour of the layer below the surface.
This is a genetic composition including: haemoglobin, melatonin and carotene that creates the colour. As it’s genetic it’s something that we have for life.
I’m often asked if our colours change as we get older. No they don’t – you will still be the same palette. But you may find that you look better in slightly more subdued colours within that palette.
The other question I get asked is do my colours change if I have a tan. Again the answer to that is no – you are still the same colour palette. But you may be able to wear stronger colours within that palette.
Another question is does my hair colour impact the colours I can wear? Really it’s the other way round. Your hair colour should be guided by your colour palette. We’ll look at this a bit later. But suffice to say I learnt this the hard way about 20 years ago when I decided to go very auburn…. It was not a good look!
Okay so you know that your colours are determined by the undertone of your skin but what does that mean in reality? That genetic composition means you either have more blue or yellow pigmentation in your skin. More blue means a cooler undertone, more yellow a warm undertone.
What we’re looking to do is then see what reflects and compliments that undertone, rather than fight it. We’re looking for the colours that enhance your features rather than bully them into submission!
When you wear the right colours you will radiate a healthy glow, you will be in alignment with your own natural colouring and your features will stand out.
How Does It All Work In Practice?
When I receive your photos, I then take these and put them into a presentation which is the same pantone pallet used for the physical drapes. This enables me to determine what season you are. Then I’m ready to present you with your personal analysis.
From the image you can see the four seasons we use to determine someone’s colours. There are a few points worth noting:
The colours on the left are the cool palettes and (with a couple of exceptions) have more blue in the colour composition.
Whereas the colours on the right are the warm palettes and have more yellow in their mix.
You will either be a cool or warm palette. Generally, most people will then be either the strong or muted colours, which will determine their season. In practice there is a bit of overlap depending on where you sit within a season.
So when we do the ‘draping’ as part of the analysis, we are comparing the various seasons and what looks best.
Examples Of Wearing The Right or Wrong Colours
This is a comparison of the orange and pinks from each season.
A This colour looks pretty good – my eyes show up and the colour is in balance with my skin tone
B The orange overwhelms me. You can see the colour and not me.
C The magenta looks good with my eyes, but you’re looking at the colour more than me
D Eeek – sorry no other way to describe this it’s insipid!
Now let’s have a look at Green
A – This green has cool blue undertones. I have cool undertones but this green is too strong for me.
B – Not a great look on me! This is a really pretty colour and one I’d have chosen before having my colours done, but it overwhelms me!
C – A lovely earthy green but not for me, it’s making me look unwell. This is an autumn green, which works with a warm undertone with contrast – think Julia Roberts.
D – This soft blue green is the right shade for me. It’s balancing my features with the colour so that none of them are overpowering.
I build this picture up for my client with each of the key colours coming to a conclusion as to what season she is, which is the first phase of the process.
How To Apply This In Practise
The second part of the consultation looks at putting this into practical application.
We look at the colour characteristics of the season, what this means in terms of make-up, jewellery and hair colours.
After our virtual colour analysis consultation I will send my client her own colour swatch, so we talk about how to use that.
Then we look at some clothes I’ve found in her favourite places to shop that are in her colours.
Finally, we consider some of her clothes, accessories and or make-up to see if these are in her palette or what she should be looking for.
My mantra is always not about simply getting rid of clothing that isn’t in your palette, but instead finding ways to wear it. Close to your face – adding accessories to dilute the impact of the colour. Items not close to your face are less important.
One client of mine, finding that white wasn’t in her palette decided to dye a number of tops in white to colours in her palette. A great solution!
