“WHY A WARDROBE DECLUTTER WILL MAKE YOU FEEL AWESOME

Wardrobe Clarity

Be honest with yourself, do you really know what’s in your wardrobe?  If you don’t, then my guess is that you have items in your wardrobe that no longer fit, are too worn to wear or have just never been worn. It’s time for a wardrobe de-clutter. This 3-hour wardrobe management session normally takes place at your home with easy access to your wardrobe.

The benefits of better wardrobe management

Carrying out a wardrobe declutter is cathartic to say the least.  Too much clutter in our lives directly results in stress.

According to researchers at UCLA’s Center of Everyday Lives and Families (CELF), there’s a link between high cortisol (a stress hormone) in women who own homes with a “high density of household objects.”

If you are hanging on to items of clothing because you will ‘lose that bit of weight’ and fit back into them some day, you’re putting yourself under immense pressure. I’m not saying that everything that is too tight has to go, but be realistic about it.

Knowing you have fewer items to chose from, but that each one of them works to create an outfit makes getting dressed easy and no longer a chore.

Clutter can affect your mood, as a messy room or wardrobe can be a sign your life is in a mess.  Clearing your physical space can also clear your mental space.  It can release energy and you will often feel ready to allow new things in.

A minimalist style can help you to be more creative.  With only one jersey dress for example, gives you lots of scope to style it to create different looks.  Conversely if you have several jersey dresses you’re more likely to just alternate one or two dresses.  You are less likely to experiment with accessories and jackets to create different looks.

Okay I’m convinced – what next?

Once you have booked the wardrobe management consultation, I will come to your house and we will discuss the image you want to create. Who you are  and how you want to show up in the world.

We will then look at your lifestyle.  We will consider roughly how much time you spend on various activities.  This helicopter view gives me an insight into whether your wardrobe reflects your lifestyle.

Then I will ask you to show me your favourite outfit or items of clothing. I want to understand what you love about them and how they make you feel.  By starting with the benchmark of an item you love puts you in a positive frame of mind.

We will then work through your wardrobe item by item to decide whether an item should stay.  This is based on a number of factors, which will be personal to you.  But the fundamental questions we will ask are:

Do you love it?
Do you wear it?

If you don’t love it, then what’s it doing in your wardrobe?  If you don’t wear it, then we’ll question why. It may be in the wrong colours or style for you. It may not reflect who you are. Or it may simply be that you haven’t worked out how to style it, so it remains hanging in your wardrobe.

If you have items in your wardrobe that you’re not wearing, it’s important to explore the reasons why. I do not believe in throwing clothes out for the sake of it. But equally, if it’s not right for you and we can’t make it work by creating outfits with other items, then it is time to say goodbye.

What about the clothes for recycling?

I will give you ideas of what you can do with the clothes we get rid of as part of your wardrobe management consultation. This will range from what to do with clothes that have a resale value to those that are not suitable for re-wear.

Passionate about clothes not ending up in landfill, I will give you a wide range of options depending on the potential value and condition of the garments.

There may also be clothes that may work if they are altered or repurposed. Again, I will make suggestions and recommendations based on individual items.

Practicalities of the wardrobe management consultation

You will need to be ready to try on your clothes as we go through the wardrobe declutter process. How an item looks on a hanger is so often quite different from how it looks when you’re wearing it.

As we create new outfits, combining different pieces you may not have considered, I will create a photographic record of these. I will also make a list of items that you may wish to purchase.

The time spent on this consultation will vary depending on the size of your wardrobe. I normally allow three hours.

If you have not had your colours analysed, I strongly recommend we combine this service with a colour analysis.

You may also want to add the wardrobe management session to a colour analysis and style consultation to give yourself a complete style makeover. We can then use everything we have from the colour and style consultation to put to best use as we work through the wardrobe detox.
