Does your style reflect you?  What do I mean by this?  When you get dressed do you ever think about what your clothes are saying about you.   This is  because our clothes speak volumes before we even have a chance to open our mouths.

Hence the clothes we wear are a great way to tell others how we are feeling and to express our values.

If you are a caring person running your own coaching business, you are unlikely to meet a client in a formal business suit.   This is an extreme example to illustrate the question does your style reflect you.

For many of us it is more subtle than this, but other people will pick up on what you are wearing and make judgments based on your appearance.

The clothing we wear gives out powerful messages to other people. Our clothes are a form of non-verbal communication to others.  Consequently what we wear can speak volumes about us, before we have a chance to speak.  If you enter a room full of people you don’t know how often do you make a guess on what they do or what interests them based on their clothes or accessories?

When we first meet we make snap decisions about each other based on a number of factors. This includes our appearance. We have been doing that since we were running away from woolly mammoths.  While we are told never to judge a book by its covers, let’s face it we do!

Consequently for people we know our clothing may send out signals to others as to we are feeling on a particular day.  The messages may be quite subtle.  Hence they are almost a reminder that we’re the person they thought we were. Alternatively they may trigger signals that either we are very happy or perhaps we’re not having such a great day.

As a result the messages we convey about our personality will still be there.  This is regardless of what is happening in our lives, we may simply dumb this down or chose to shout about it.  As a result we do this in very subtle ways throughout our wardrobe:

  • Choice of fabric
  • Colour
  • Prints
  • Styles of clothes
  • Accessories

While we can think about our own wardrobes, it’s fun to take someone in the public eye as an example.  Consequently let’s take a much talked about item, Teresa May’s footwear.  Her love of fun, eye-catching footwear says that the Prime Minister is:

  • Bold
  • Not afraid to stand out from the crowd
  • Loves to express her femininity
  • Extrovert with a sense of fun

Teresa May combines her statement footwear with a classic look to show her professionalism and elegance.
